Wine of the Month: CARO

Posted 17 March 14

“An association between two cultures, two families and two grapes”

The idea of forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family was first mooted in 1998, they planned to produce a single wine that would combine French and Argentine cultures and the two signature grapes of each producer, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon.
CARO, from CAtena and ROthschild, has a strong Argentine identity, heralded by Malbec, while obtaining further elegance and complexity through blending with Cabernet Sauvignon. The combination has made a rich and refined wine; a harmonious balance between the Argentine and Bordeaux styles. I fell in love with this wine at the first sip!

CARO 2010
A 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 60% Malbec, it's aged for 18 months in oak barrels with an average annual production of 5,000 cases.
Intense, deep red colour with fine hints of purple.
The nose offers pleasant aromas of red and dark fruit, with an after taste of mint and cedar. The bouquet fills out with notes of vanilla, spices and mocha, characteristic of French oak.
This is a dense, complex wine, with good tannic structure.
The lingering finesse of the tannins gives the wine good length and a pleasant, soft mouth feel.
